I was first introduced to the Hungarian Mudi breed by Sue Witte. She has been my good friend for many years and initially came to me looking for a positive agility trainer for her Mudi. I just adored her dogs and fell in love with the breed. I just "understand them" as a dog. Mudis were bred as a general-purpose farm dog of Hungary that were required to provide many useful services to the Hungarian farmer. Some of their duties are to extinguish vermin, take cattle to and from the pastures, alarm bark at intruders, and guard property boundaries. They have a soft, loyal side to their personalities, but are really tough when they have to be. There is no doubt they bond strongly to individual people. Mudis are extremely clever and perform farm duties independently so when partnering in training, it is important they feel they have equality in the decision making. I have adored Nyalka since the day I met him. Erika Kiss brought him to me from Hungary. Together Nyalka and I have learned how to do Agility under the rules of being a Mudi. Mudis are very clear communicators and they will demand that you listen to them. Nyalka doesn't particularly like the agility competition environment' however, together he and I have been quite successful. I have to say tjere are times I wish I had listened to him sooner and some of our failures may have been avoided. We continue our journey in pursuit of our agility goals and I continue learning on the way. Nyalka enjoys a balanced dog-life where he enjoys loads of fun activities.

There is no question that Glock is a favorite among my students. He was the busiest puppy in the litter and handpicked for me by my sister. Beverly had two litters available and I told my sister to just "pick one and put him in the car." I'm a firm believer that you get the dogs you are meant to have. Glock was a particularly immature puppy both mentally and physically so I have taken his training slower, with no rush to put lofty Agility goals on him. He is a terrific companion in life and accompanies us on all sorts of adventures. He is game for anything, loves people, and is the first dog I've ever owned that goes crazy when he sees a puppy! He is just a happy dog and never has a bad day!

After really enjoying Nyalka, my first Mudi, I decided I really wanted another one. I also made the decision to get a female because I thought having two Male Mudis might be more challenging. I had found on Tibor Kiraly's (Nyalka's breeder) website that there were two Merle female puppies available. At the time my friend Inga's parents were on a European vacation and with the help of my friend Erika... we somehow managed to coordinate bringing Minta home with them! I flew to Minneapolis and met Inga's parents outside the gate at customs with this little Mudi baby in their hands. Minta is truly a special girl. She has chosen my boyfriend Mike as her human and they are inseparable. She is a terrific little dog! Minta is nicely trained in Agility but will not be making her debut until she is older. The Mudi breed are very aware of their environment and I want her agility skills to be very strong before putting her in competition.

Formerly known as Kato, Komoly is the third Mudi to join my family. His previous owners were pet training clients of Lisa Christman. They were struggling with Komoly's adolescent, Mudi behaviors. Mudi are particularly challenging dogs if you don't understand what you're dealing with. Most of them are still very closely bred a generation or so off of a working farm. It is almost a necessity that your Mudi has a job! Otherwise, they will find something to do and it may not be exactly to your liking. My original plan was to take him in and evaluate him for a new home. He was very high drive / high stress dog, with inappropriate dog and human behaviors. I planned on doing some basic behavior training and find him a suitable home. After living with him a few months, building his trust in me he started to calm down and loved training. As he learned how to communicate with other dogs and develop a routine to his life, I noticed he had an incredible work ethic as well as being super smart. I had several homes available but ultimately decided to keep him because of his raw potential. He is definitely an intense dog, with extreme drive. It took these past two years to bond together as he was just not confident about relationships with people. He's a really fun Agility dog and I am enjoying training him. He has done quite well in the early stages of competition. He came to me afraid of water and now he is an incredible swimmer! He definitely has an energy level and enthusiasm for life reminiscent of my Belgian Sheepdog "Serge".

Phlox is from my sister's breeding of "War x Flame". I like to say they are Miracle babies since it took a lot of effort to get them. Phlox is exactly what my sister predicted ... The best of Flame and War all rolled into one. Terrific work ethic, great structure, super confident, stable and extremely smart. A really fun girl to train who is just about game for anything! She inherited Flame's love for tennis balls and War's good looks. She will be a year old May 25, 2014 and I just love her! I expect her to be one of a kind!

Rukh and Phoenix both came from Beverly Lambert. He was a softer dog but again had terrific drive with a great work ethic! Beverly kept his brother Hemp, whom has had a very successful herding career. Rukh has also achieved many championships, had terrific runs and participated in many final rounds. I adored him most for how he would snuggle up with me whenever I was sick, gave the best hugs, and left me way too soon.

Phoenix is my most titled and accomplished agility dog. More importantly, she is an exceptional companion, a tireless worker, a resilient competitor, and what I call the most honest dog I have ever shared my life with. It was Julie Daniels who said to me years ago, "Phoenix is going to make you an exceptional trainer". I never forgot those words and they led me to read my dogs and always make adjustments in my training. It is the one thing I remind my students of all the time ...the honestly of animals, the value to the behavior the dog gives you. You can make so much progress in training when you can objectively look at the cause and effect. Working with Phoenix has been an absolute pleasure. I often say, if you are lucky enough to get a dog like Phoenix, appreciate every moment!

I can remember the day my sister and I sat watching agility many years ago trying to figure out what dogs were actually good at this sport.... And it was then that we saw the spirit of the border collie and thought this was a dog who truly enjoyed the game. I found Wren in need of a home and just adored her from the moment I met her. She is everything a border collie should be. We have had a fabulous career together. She made me accountable for my mistakes and in return, I learned some very valuable lessons. I learned early on as a trainer that my relationship and ability to communicate would result in an overall more enjoyable journey in the world of agility competition. Wren was an amazing teacher to me and what I learned from her was invaluable. She had some of her best competitive runs when she was 10 years old and her love for the sport never wavered even through my learning curves. Today, she is my shadow, follows me everywhere and is still a precious companion at 14 years old.

My second agility Pomeranian. Thorn is a happy little guy who was easy to train. Lots of energy and with a "big dog" personality. He wasn't very comfortable in the competition environment so we initially did some competing but it wasn't my main focus. He has always been buddies with my Keeshond and he loves to play with all my dogs.

Named after Ferdinand the bull. When I first brought him home he would just sit outside stick his nose in the air and sniff the world around him.... He was plagued with a lot of digestive problems which he has battled most of his life, really challenging him in his later years. He had a good beginning Agility career until he was plagued with chronic Lyme which gave him no motivation to do Agility. This was before we knew how debilitating Lyme disease could be. Now we can recognize the most subtle changes in our dogs and suspect they may be suffering from Lyme. Ferdinand is very smart and has always been a big participant in dog activities around the house.

1999-2011
"A diamond in the rough" my sister called him the day we found him in at the no kill shelter "Paws" in Montclair NJ. He was found wandering the streets at 4 months old, adopted out twice and returned to the shelter both times as he was aggressive and told to be euthanized. The shelter was apprehensive about adopting him out, but I explained I was looking to rescue a dog that really needed the home. Serge was challenging from the moment I got him, an extremely high drive, very assertive dog who had no bite inhibition. He was an extreme resource guarder. He was also a free spirit with a zest for life unlike any dog I have known. I knew he would change my life! He challenged me as a trainer and ultimately taught me the most about my relationship with dogs. His agility titles are my most cherished titles because of how much we went through together to achieve them.
Mira (rescued from Aruba) 1999-2016
"Mira" was rescued in September 2000 from the Island of Aruba. I found her while on vacation. She was a stray dog living under a tree with a litter of puppies begging for food from tourists. While there, I found homes for her puppies but decided I couldn't leave her behind. I named her after the street I found her near. She is a super sweet dog going on 16 years old. She did agility only recreationally and has been a wonderful companion.

Belle 1998-2013
This little angel was a gift from my sister in 1998. She was my second dog whom I showed in conformation, trained obedience and was my first competition agility dog. I will never forget my first agility trial where my sister and I showed up in the pouring rain with our little Pomeranian's ready to run. Little did we know that putting young agility dogs in the ring for the first time in unsavory conditions wasn't the best idea. However, my love for the sport grew from that day as I collected my first ribbon with my little Pomeranian. It was a ribbon for participation and not a qualifying score, but that didn't matter to me. I was so excited to embark on this new sport that had so many exciting challenges. Belle loved jumpers courses and at five pounds she was one of the smallest competitors around. She had her fears and taught me as a young trainer to problem solve and try to come up with better training solutions for her. They didn't always work, but she was a trooper and worked through her fears. She taught me so much about behavior, understanding my expectations, and the balance of what is really important in agility. Of course it's amazing to do well and earn titles, but Belle taught me it was about partnership and learning together and the journey.
Nile (Cane Corso Mastiff)
1997-2002
1997-2002
The dog that started it all.... He was a adorable puppy and the first dog I owned as an adult. He was my friend. When I showed up with this rare bred "Cane Corso" mastiff puppy my father looked at me and said "I cannot believe you started with the hardest dog...." My parents had bred German Shepherds and I was quite accustomed to the loyalty and intelligence of a Shepherd. Nile proved to be an extremely rewarding dog although as a new trainer he was challenging as well. He was particularly fearful after a year old which led me right into positive reinforcement training. I learned you can't correct fear and build confidence in a dog. Back when I started learning, correction based training was the norm and was being taught in most training schools. With Nile, this clearly wasn't working and I had to find a better way. I am so thankful he was my first dog! I did try competitive obedience with him but found that to be way too difficult given his level of fear. Unfortunately, he died at four years old from kidney failure ... at the time I was devastated. He was my heart.
